Basic Chemise

Underpinnings/Basic_Chemise_Cream3WM.jpg

Lower classes used the long chemise as the basic work garment, night gown, and bathing garment.  Upper classes used the chemise as layer between the skin and their more elaborate garments.  This way, the chemise absorbed more of the body odor and sweat, preventing the expensive clothing from as much laundering.

The basic chemise is made of cotton (or cotton blend).  An elastic or drawstring-gathered neckline can be worn either on or off the shoulders.  Sleeves can be long or short and close with elastic.

The chemise can be made hip length, ankle length, or shortened for wear with a half-bodice.  Ankle-length chemise can be worn over a hoop.

You can make this chemise fancier with sleeve options or different fabrics.

Prices begin at $60 depending on fabrics and options selected.
